Hypnotherapy for Pain Management – Birmingham

Chronic pain — pain that persists for more than three months — affects roughly 1 in 4 UK adults. It’s exhausting in a way that acute pain isn’t, partly because there’s no end point. You can’t grit your teeth and wait for it to pass when it doesn’t pass.

Hypnotherapy is one of the most evidence-based complementary approaches for chronic pain. It doesn’t make pain disappear. What it does, with strong research backing, is reduce both the perception of pain and the distress around it.

What hypnotherapy can and can’t do

It can:

  • Reduce the perception of pain — the brain’s amplification of pain signals decreases under hypnosis.
  • Reduce the distress around pain — making it more bearable, even when present.
  • Improve sleep — often the first casualty of chronic pain and a major contributor to making pain worse.
  • Restore quality of life — so pain becomes one part of life rather than the only part.

It can’t:

  • Replace medical investigation or treatment.
  • Cure underlying physical conditions.
  • Replace pain medication, though many clients reduce their use with their GP’s input.

What I work with

  • Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain.
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Post-surgical chronic pain.
  • Migraines and chronic headaches.
  • Joint pain, including arthritis.
  • Nerve pain, also known as neuropathic pain.
  • Pain associated with IBS or other gut conditions.
  • Cancer-related pain alongside oncology care at QE Birmingham or your treatment centre.

For any chronic pain, please see your GP or pain consultant first to ensure the cause has been properly investigated. Many Birmingham clients come to me on the recommendation of their consultant at QE Birmingham, Birmingham Pain Clinic, or BMI Edgbaston.

How sessions go at the Edgbaston clinic

The approach combines:

  • Clinical hypnotherapy — the relaxation work that directly reduces pain perception.
  • NLP and CBH — the thought patterns around pain, such as “I’ll never get better” or “this is who I am now”.
  • Coaching — practical changes to sleep, movement, stress and routine that affect pain levels.

I often record a personalised relaxation track for clients to use between sessions, particularly helpful for clients managing daily pain.

Most chronic pain clients see meaningful change within 8 to 12 sessions.

FAQs

Both. Research consistently shows hypnotherapy reduces the perception of pain — not just the distress. The mechanism is partly through reducing the brain’s stress response (which amplifies pain) and partly through altered awareness during the relaxation itself.
Absolutely yes. Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy, not a replacement for medical care. Many Birmingham clients come on the recommendation of their consultant.
Some clients reduce their medication once pain improves — always in consultation with their GP, never on their own.
Often yes. For chronic pain clients in particular, a personalised relaxation track between sessions can extend the benefit of each session significantly.
