Hypnotherapy for Emetophobia (Fear of Being Sick) in Harley Street, London

Hypnotherapy for Emetophobia at Stuart Downing's Harley Street, London clinic

Hypnotherapy for Emetophobia – London

Emetophobia — the intense fear of being sick, or of seeing someone else being sick — is one of the most under-recognised phobias and one of the most life-narrowing. London clients with emetophobia often describe lives that have shrunk dramatically: avoiding the tube, avoiding restaurants, avoiding social occasions, avoiding pregnancy, sometimes avoiding leaving the flat entirely in winter.

If you have emetophobia, none of this is dramatic. It doesn’t respond to logic. The good news: it responds well to hypnotherapy.

What emetophobia actually involves

The phobia rarely sits in isolation. Most clients also experience:

  • Severe food anxiety — avoiding foods that have ever made you ill, restaurant food, food cooked by others, takeaway, or anything where preparation can’t be controlled.
  • Restriction patterns — sometimes mistaken for eating disorders, driven by fear of nausea rather than fear of weight.
  • Avoidance of London-specific environments — the tube, crowded buses, busy restaurants, hospitals, schools and public transport during illness seasons.
  • Hypervigilance during winter — particularly around norovirus outbreaks in London.
  • Fear of pregnancy — particularly morning sickness.
  • Health anxiety overlap — every stomach sensation becomes evidence of imminent sickness.
  • Panic responses to mild nausea — fleeting digestive discomfort triggers full anxiety.
  • Sleep difficulties.

Why emetophobia persists

Most emetophobia starts in childhood after a specific frightening experience. The early experience sets up an alarm response that’s never been updated. By adulthood, the alarm fires at cues other people wouldn’t notice.

How sessions go at the Harley Street clinic

The work usually combines:

  • EMDR for the founding event.
  • Clinical hypnotherapy for the underlying anxiety and desensitisation.
  • NLP for the catastrophic thoughts.
  • Coaching for gradually reintroducing avoided foods, situations and contexts — particularly important in London where so much social and professional life involves food, restaurants and travel.

I don’t ask you to think about being sick in detail, watch videos, or do anything that increases distress beyond what’s productive.

Most emetophobia clients need 6 to 10 sessions.

Online sessions

Many London emetophobia clients start with online sessions via Zoom because the practical avoidance has made getting to in-person therapy difficult. The work is the same online as in person.

When this work isn’t the whole picture

For severe food restriction affecting weight, nutrition, or physical health, please involve your GP. London has good specialist eating disorder services — both NHS and private — that may be relevant alongside the emetophobia work.

For emetophobia in pregnancy, the work is time-sensitive and worth starting as early as possible.

Sessions at 1 Harley Street or online via Zoom.
