If small things are setting you off — Northern line delays, an email from a colleague, a cyclist cutting you up, a queue at Pret — and the reactions are bigger than the situations deserve, you usually know it’s a problem before anyone else does.
Telling yourself to “calm down” doesn’t work. Counting to ten doesn’t work. Walking away helps in the moment but doesn’t change the pattern.
This is treatable. The trick is treating the underlying cause, not the surface reaction.
Anger is a stress response — specifically the fight half of fight-or-flight. When your stress bucket is full, the threshold for an angry response drops. Small triggers produce big reactions because the system was already primed.
For many London clients, the underlying stress has been building for years — high-pressure work, long commutes, financial pressure, relationship demands. By the time anger becomes a problem, the bucket has been overflowing for months.
This is why anger management isn’t really about anger. It’s about the stress, anxiety, or unprocessed past experience that’s lowering your threshold.
Sessions combine:
Most anger management clients see substantial change within 6 to 10 sessions.
Hypnotherapy works well for anger from accumulated stress, unprocessed experience, or learned emotional patterns. It works less well when someone is being told to come and doesn’t want to be there themselves.
For court-mandated programmes, you’ll need a recognised group programme. If your anger has led to violence — particularly toward a partner, family member, or child — please contact specialist support for people using violence or abuse.
Sessions at 1 Harley Street or online via Zoom.
